On October 8, 1997, I flew to New York and planned to stay for three weeks. My idea: to find a gallery willing to exhibit my new series „Swimming Pool.“ I was able to stay with an old friend in a loft downtown at 133 Mulberry Street. My sleeping space: a roughly 2 x 2 meter area with a bed, separated from the rest of the room by large sheets. Jet lag forced me to go to bed at 10 p.m. and get up at 5 a.m. From 6 a.m. onward, I was out on the streets of Manhattan, photographing the awakening city. I took advantage of the morning light, its rays shining through the skyline. This is how my „New York City“ series was born. On October 25, I flew back to Paris with a handful of wonderful images of the city that never sleeps.
And I had also found a gallery.
